JUST A DREAM FROM YESTERDAY
Living Island. If ever there were a first step to stopping this madness, it’s figuring out what those words mean. But starting is always the hardest part, and with nothing else to go by than two seemingly unrelated, nonsensical words left behind by a force you can’t see much less communicate with, an already arduous task seems even more impossible. This is furthered by the reactions you get when you hit the street and start asking people if they know anything about Living Island. Most of them can only look back at you blankly, as if waiting for a punchline that never comes. Others actually take you seriously enough to consider the question, and to their credit, they do take their time racking their brains to remember where they’ve heard that name before, why it sounds so familiar. But the most you’ll get back from them is a sheepish shrug of the shoulders and a reply that it sounds like something from TV. It gets to the point where their answers blend together, each one more unremarkable than the last. Save for the one you get from the last person you haven’t asked. Living Island.

OOC INFO
Welcome to the second part of February’s event! You can use this entry to top-level for the event, but feel free to utilize the log and network communities as well.
There will be a top-level posted for NPC interaction tied to the second prompt below, wherein you can request to play out your character’s interaction with Harding or Rosemary. If you would like to have your character interact with either one of them, comment to the top-level with the name of the NPC you would like to thread with. You may only thread with one NPC. The mods will respond to NPC tags until February 28th.
Any questions can go in our FAQ thread below. Try to check and see if your question has already been answered on the plotting thread first here.

D
And among the other escapees, outside, is a familiar figure. A bloodied familiar figure, with obvious signs of injury and mistreatment.
Da Vinci's face twists into a rare horrified look, her voice barely holding back a tremble. Even she can't mask it entirely.]
What... What the hell?!
[In an instant, she's by Kiara's side, torn between offering her support if she needs it and getting in closer to examine what's been done to her.]
What happened? And be careful... you might still be bleeding!
[It's not that she's more concerned for Kiara than the others, exactly. Not even because of the rough shape she seems to be in. It's just... complicated. Like it hits home more with someone who also used to be a Servant.]
no subject
I appreciate the concern, but surely the others...
[She's going to say the others are worse off than her, and she truly does think that. But that doesn't really seem to be a popular argument with people worried about her, so that thought won't be completely voiced.]
...they've gone through similar experiences, and could use proper care as well.
[There, that's close enough to what she'd like to say without trying to downplay her own suffering. If Da Vinci wants to inspect the damage, she won't protest, but she also won't act like she received the worst from their captors.]
no subject
She quickly pulls herself together, not entirely snapping back to the professional facade she's grown accustomed to putting up. But definitely closer to it.]
We'll do our best to help everyone, of course. [There's no one immediately nearby who desperately needs assistance, though, so she's going to indulge her curiosity.] For now, just... tell me what happened. Were you even aware of what they were doing?
[Even as she asks, she examines the obvious signs of surgery, with absolutely zero concern for Kiara's personal space. A replaced eye, bloodied cloth over her chest... was there anything else she was missing?]
no subject
Not entirely. I can recall some of it, but...
[For obvious reasons, she doesn't sound quite happy about this trip down memory lane. It's definitely not about having Da Vinci in her personal space, Kiara doesn't really care if people get in her personal space, though she doesn't try to do the same to others these days.
As far as signs of any procedures, those are the main two that most would notice. On closer inspection, there's some needle marks showing she was injected with something a few times, so there's that as well.]
I woke up in the building along with the others. I have no idea how I was taken, and every so often they would release some sort of...most likely a gas into the room to knock us unconscious. Then we would be taken from our cages and subjected to this sort of thing...
[She trails off, trying to decide what details to tell and which not to. It's not out of a wish to conceal anything, it's just unpleasant to dwell on.]
Perhaps most importantly to you, I was questioned about a number of things. My past, my home, my abilities. I'm sorry, I may have told them things I shouldn't have. I found myself unable to conceal anything from them.
[That's not to imply that Da Vinci doesn't care about the physical damage or anything, but she figures that would be concerning, even if Kiara can't imagine what anyone would do with that info. Or in regards to her powers, why they wouldn't have it already if they're able to suppress them.]
I wasn't conscious for this though. A small kindness, I suppose.
[She'll raise her hand up to the glass eye, using her finger to keep it in place since having it fall out during this conversation is something she'd like to avoid.]
no subject
[That's the first thing she keys in on, while she examines what she can see of Kiara's skin. Especially the needle marks.]
So these aren't from anesthetics or sedatives? If you were interrogated...
[She just lets that trail off, the various possibilities left hanging in the air. She can't imagine what someone who has the power to bring the two of them to this place, in ordinary human bodies, could have to gain by learning more about their pasts and abilities either. But Kiara's right, it is something to be concerned about. Perhaps there are even multiple forces at play here?]
Well... nothing we can do about that now. Just something to be aware of, moving forward.
[She watches Kiara cover her glass eye with her finger, a wave of comparatively more mundane concern crossing Da Vinci's face.]
Do you feel up to walking, at least? You'd probably like to get home and rest, after all of that. I might be able to do something about the eye too, if you give me some time. At least to make it more comfortable...
[There's a genuine pang of regret there that she can't just heal Kiara's injuries, and whatever else might have been done to her, with magecraft.]
I apologize for Kiara being Kiara
[She's not going to say that sucked, but...yeah, it sucked.]
After the last round of it, I found myself like this.
[She'll point at the blood on her chest.]
It's rather cruel really. If I get too worked up, it's like an electric current running through my body. Normally, I could find some delight in that sort of thing, but at the moment...
[A crestfallen look crosses her face because of course it does. Of course this is Kiara's concern that right now she can't enjoy getting shocked by the pacemaker.]
Well, I'll just have to take things slowly from now on. Or slower, as it were.
[So yes, she can walk. Sorry about the weird detour getting to the answer.]
Ah, but do you think that's possible? Here I was expecting to have to manage with this until I were resummoned, but having a less difficult replacement would be nice.
[Because she really has no idea where in town to buy a glass eye that fits.]
she can only hold herself back so much...
[Adrenaline shots are consistent with the location and type of injections she seems to have received. But the concern in her eyes flares up again at the mention of heart attacks. So that... explains the chest surgery too. What did they do, create a problem only to experiment with a crude solution? Or was it all really just to torment Kiara?]
Yes, well... [She pauses, trying not to think too hard on Kiara's logic. She's not here to kinkshame.] Ideally, we could find some solution to the other problems too. Eventually.
But for the eye, assuming the surgical foundation is good enough, all we need is to craft an aesthetically convincing replacement to more exacting measurements. What kind of genius do you take me for, if I can't manage something so simple?
[Granted, she'll need to be careful to make sure it's made with the right materials and tools for use as a medical prosthetic. It's not how she usually does things, but it does play to what skills she still has!]
no subject
[She's honestly not sure on how feasible that would be with 1961 stuff, but she figures if anyone could figure something out, it'd be Da Vinci. The same thing goes with the replacement for this glass eye of hers. She's got some medical training from her volunteer days but it's not like too much she did involved trying to figure out what was medically feasible decades before she was born.]
Still, I'll be in your care. I imagine given some of the others, your talents will be in high demand, so you may be quite busy from now on.
[Kiara can't help but think it must be nice for Da Vinci to be able to put her talents to work here. Not like Kiara who if she does, depending on regains could end up causing some sort of giant mess. Must be nice not having to worry about that kind of thing!]
no subject
[It would be nice to have an actual medical professional they could trust on hand, for this sort of thing. Any number of the remaining Chaldea medical staff would have done. Or, if things could have gone differently back then, maybe...
... Well. There are limits to how much even she can make up for his absence, it seems.]
Maybe I won't even charge them. Much.
[Suddenly, her tone is lighter, mischievous. It's almost like she's covering for serious private thoughts by inappropriately joking around!]
no subject
I think you'd have quite the monopoly even with there being a hospital around. So really it'd be quite gracious to keep the prices low.
[Alternatively Da Vinci becomes the town's first billionaire.]
