FEBRUARY 2021 EVENT: PART ONE

CHAPTER TWO, PART 1: A LIGHT LUNCH

Good times, great olives, Uliveto's.

INVITES AND INSISTENCES | BISQUE AND BREADSTICKS | FONTINA AND FOCACCIA | MUNDANITY AND MISHAPS

INVITES AND INSISTENCES

After a fairly low-key January, you start hearing the buzz on February 1st: The Happy Homes Association is inviting you to a luncheon on Friday! Stylishly dressed women in coats and hats are inviting everyone they know in the neighborhood, coming up and knocking on your door to invite you personally to come along. “Noon on Friday at Uliveto’s,” one of them tells you with a bright smile. “There’ll be food and drinks, and the whole community can get together and mingle a bit!”

Whether you’re home to answer the door or not, you’ll receive a small card advertising the event — it’s a fundraiser, after all, and they need your help! Pay just $3 and your food and as much as you’d like to drink are covered.

But some of the HHA members are a little more insistent, roving the neighborhood in search of anyone who’s just moved to Santa Rosita in the past few months. Their almost too-wide smiles and slightly-vacant eyes are a dead giveaway that these neighbors aren’t all at home, and they aren’t willing to take anything less than a “Yes” when they ask you if you’re coming. You’ve got to wash your hair? They know a hairdresser over at the salon on Main Street who can fit you in today. Groceries? Why, their daughter can take care of that for you in a jiffy! No excuse will fly with these Robbies; they’ve always got an answer and a way for you to make an appearance.

It won’t end once you’ve agreed, either (even if you just agree to get them off your back!). With the promise of another guest at the luncheon, the Robbies are quick to suggest that you should help them! There are so many people in the town, after all, and with more people volunteering to spread the word, they can make this the most successful fundraiser ever! (Or, well, at least the most successful since last year’s Little League candy sales!) Look, there’s another of your new neighbors over there — why don’t you go and invite them now? Your new friends from the HHA will be right here to support you and help you out!

BISQUE AND BREADSTICKS

On Friday, February 5th, Uliveto’s is easy to find — just follow the train of cars headed to North Santa Rosita, where the restaurant sits just off of Main Street with a parking lot that’s packed full. Hopefully you’re willing to walk, because it looks like the luncheon is in full swing! But as you get closer, you see that the ladies of the HHA have things down to a science as they welcome neighbors, invite them to join one of the many tables set up in the half of the restaurant they’ve taken over, and integrate newcomers into conversation.

“Oh, hello!” one of the ladies gushes as she spots you. “I’m so glad you could make it! It’s a little cold today, but you should try the tomato bisque — it always warms me right up! Come with me and Betty can get you all set up with your meal voucher; have you ever been to Uliveto’s before? It’s just divine; the salad and breadsticks are all you can eat and the pasta — golly, my mother never even tried to outdo it. We’d just come here instead!”

Before you know it, you’ve paid your entrance and have been shown to one of the large party tables (or maybe they’re multiple tables pushed together? What restaurant normally has tables that seat 20 people?), a waitress offering you the drinks menu and asking if you’d like to start with a glass of (nonalcoholic, of course!) wine. Once she’s gone, you’ll finally get a chance to look around the interior of the restaurant. The walls are a warm yellowed beige, and fluted columns break up the space with clinging ivy and grapes hanging from planters near the top. A mural is painted on the far wall of a terrace looking out over rolling hills and vineyards, and the soft music of an accordion reaches your ears…

“You all right, hon?”

One of the ladies at your table is looking at you expectantly. Don’t forget, you’re here to mingle and socialize! Time to break out that small talk!

FONTINA AND FOCACCIA

As the luncheon continues, you may be able to notice some of the HHA volunteers scurrying back and forth, taking turns manning the doors and the small table where Betty’s taking donations and issuing meal vouchers. Watch long enough and you’ll be able to see that all of them are ultimately reporting to three ladies who confer at a smaller table set back from all the mingling, talking amongst themselves and from time to time making notes in a small ledger.

At about half past noon, one of the women stands, calling out, “May I have your attention, please?” She has to repeat it a couple times to be heard, but after a minute or two everybody settles down. The woman nods toward all of the guests, then turns back to the table, allowing one of the women to stand and make herself known. Tall, graceful, and neat, she takes a look around the room as she speaks — does her gaze linger a moment on you?

Good afternoon, everyone. For those of you who may not know me yet, my name is Rosemary Craven, and I’m the head of our local Happy Homes Association.
A small wave of applause breaks out from some of the ladies; Rosemary seems to indulge them for just a moment before she lifts a gloved hand to quell it.

Please. I can only manage what I’m given, and the fine women of the association give me plenty to work with. Their efforts to organize this luncheon for all of us today showcase the dedication we should all strive for. Ladies, please stand and be recognized.

Today’s fundraiser is to benefit our town as Founder’s Day approaches in April. We’ve got big plans for the funds we raise — who knows? Perhaps we’ll be able to afford some yummy treats for the children. Who doesn’t love an ice cream cake?

Your generosity today makes all of this possible. You’ll forgive me for not giving you hard numbers, but I’d hate to be so gauche in such a lovely restaurant. Let me assure you, though, that the Happy Homes Association is here to help you in whatever way we can, whether that’s by helping you redecorate your homes, bringing over home-cooked meals, or teaching you some new skills — and speaking of new skills, I’d like to invite all of our new neighbors to talk with me personally if you think you might be interested in helping us out from time to time. Sewing might not be your forte, but everybody’s got something they’re good at, and we can always use the extra hands.

I’ll let you all get back to your meals. If you have any questions for me, please seek me out. I’ll be sitting just over here with Maude.

MUNDANITY AND MISHAPS

After the luncheon, things in Santa Rosita continue on as normal. The weekend comes and goes, the work week begins, and the cold February wind blows…

But when you wake up on February 10th, some of you are missing.

OOC INFO

Welcome to the first part of February’s event! You can use this entry to top-level for the event, but feel free to utilize the log and network communities as well. Sign-ups to have your character abducted are located here; please fill out the form provided along with any other pertinent details.

You may play with the townsfolk NPCs as necessary in your threads; non-Robbied neighbors will be cordial and happy to make small talk and will try to maintain the pleasant atmosphere. Robbies will, as always, be mindlessly optimistic and complimentary about everything—you may find that most of the Robbies have congregated at their own table and are bubbling with excitement over just about anything.

There will be a top-level posted for Rosemary below. If you would like to have your character interact with her, comment with your starter there. The mods will respond to tags for Rosemary until February 15th.

Any questions can go in our FAQ thread below. Try to check and see if your question has already been answered on the plotting thread first here.

Remember — part 2 of this event is coming February 15th!

Invites and Insistences

Wrathion is caught in the process of unwinding a soft, red scarf as Huaisang and his accomplice approach. He's inches from his house, ready to finally relax, and thus awkwardly has nowhere to go. Huaisang, at least, he recognises from the holiday tree episode. Ethel, not so much. Her sense of fashion and her fixed smile doesn't immediately suggest she's anything but a local.

He begins undoing the top two frog fastenings, hoping the indication he is going inside shortly might dissuade any lengthy conversation out in the cold. The coat is knee length, black with what might be embroidered scale patterns around the cuffs, a gold ribbon trim all around the edges and a geometric pattern around the bottom. It's certainly not something that fits with the local style, since Wrathion made it himself.

"A fundraiser?" he inquires, "what are we raising funds for?"

After all, he's curious despite himself.

"Oh, the Happy Homes Association really does so much around the community, don't you think?" Huaisang gushes, taking the lead so as to sooner convince Ethel that he really doesn't need the assistance. "We really all need to pitch in to help keep our community thriving."

Ethel echoes some more cheerful and empty explanations about the fundraiser and the lunch before Huaisang chirps up again. "Our families should plan to go together! You and my son Angelo are just about the same age, after all, and it would be good for both of you to make more friends."

Who on earth is Angelo?

Wrathion has no idea, but pastes on a pleasant smile regardless. The more he plays along, he suspects, the quicker it will be over.

"I'd be delighted," he enthuses, "I'm sure it would be all the more enjoyable to be there in your company."

He glances toward Ethel, then back to Huaisang. Ethel seems... to be particularly cheerful, in a way that indicates to Wrathion she might be local.

"I wouldn't want to inconvenience you, of course, when you're both so busy, so I suppose planning will have to wait..."

Unless, of course, Huaisang desires to get away immediately. In which case, perhaps now is the right time to plan.

"Oh, I'd be happy to help, and I think Ethel has to get on with her rounds making sure everyone is invited!" Huaisang turns a beaming smile at Ethel. "So lovely to see you as always, darling, I can't wait to see what you'll wear to the luncheon! You know how I just love your taste in dresses."

Huaisang has rarely seen any fashion he hates more than the hideous yellow flower splatters printed on Ethel's current dress, but what matters is the way that Ethel coos and preens under the flattery, and goes on her way, leaving Huaisang alone with his friend. "Shall we head inside before anyone else makes sure we've received our invitations?"

Loves her taste in dresses? Really? Wrathion lofts an eyebrow at that, watches Ethel preen and then go marching off.

His eyes flit to Huaisang, and Wrathion studies the reaction a moment before nodding.

"Of course," he says finally, unwinding his scarf and beginning to continue onwards towards his front door. He digs for his keys, finishes unfastening his coat before he reaches to unlock and push his way in. The house is relatively normal, inside and out, aside from the instant blast of heating that's noticeable from inside. Wrathion is used to warmer climates, and so the heating has been habitually kept high. "You'll just have me for company, but I'll pass on the invitation of course."

Said with a mildly conversational tone, as if that's all they're coming inside for.
fanoperator: (attentive behind fan)

Puffing out a breath once they're safely inside, Huaisang takes off his own coat, brushing it down to make sure that no snow lingers. "I'm sure you figured out by now, Ethel is one of those locals who seem... empty. Nothing in them with cheer. No capacity for anything else. Flattery is safest with them. It makes us seem compliant."

He shivers, chewing on his lower lip. "Thank you for providing at least a temporary refuge against that. I'll try to sneak back to my own home soon."

[personal profile] blackscales 2021-02-23 10:24 am (UTC)(link)
"I suppose that does explain the flattery."

Said with the tone of someone who doesn't think it deserved. Wrathion shuts the door behind them, moves to set his keys down in a bowl and begins shrugging off his coat. It's hung up on a hook carefully, with the thin scarf settled beside it.

"I can offer you some herbal tea while you wait her out, if that would suit?"

About the best he can manage, in terms of catering for a guest. He turns from the coat hooks, straightening his shirt cuffs a little and lofting an eyebrow in question.
fanoperator: (smirk)

[personal profile] fanoperator 2021-02-25 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
Huaisang laughs a little breathlessly at Wrathion's wry comment about the flattery. He gives him a grin, ever so slightly sheepish about his blatant lying.

"That would be lovely, thank you." Looking Wrathion's fashion over with approval, Huaisang nods briefly at the coat. "Where did you find that coat? It's exquisite. And I do mean it this time. You're not Ethel. I do promise I'm not blind."
blackscales: Commission, Do Not Take! (8)

[personal profile] blackscales 2021-02-27 07:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah, his coat? He glances back at it, makes a vaguely dismissive hand gesture before turning to pace into the kitchen. The selection of herbal teas has so far disappointment Wrathion, but he does have a few that are tolerable.

"One of my own pieces. The choices here are... limited, so I had to work with what I could find in town. I hope to improve on it as time allows."

After all, he could hardly allow Huaisang to believe that was his best work. That would be insulting.
fanoperator: (excite)

[personal profile] fanoperator 2021-03-02 03:25 am (UTC)(link)
Huaisang has had a similarly difficult time finding acceptable teas. Nothing here anywhere near meets his standards. He's used to drinking the finest teas in China, and now he's drinking what might as well be charcoal ash.

"You're a clothier?" Brightening excitedly, Huaisang follows after him into the kitchen. "How wondrous. I wish I had such skills. I keep wanting to make modifications to my wardrobe but I've never learned mending and alterations like that. I can only dream of being able to design my own creations like you've done with that coat."

[personal profile] blackscales 2021-03-03 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
An unexpected bought of appreciation -- but Wrathion's ego appreciates it. He sets the water to boiling, looks up to loft an eyebrow curiously at Huaisang.

"I consider myself more a crafter -- I've dealt with gems and weapons as well as clothing. If you would like to learn, I'd say there's no time like the present. The fashion here is certainly... not to my taste."

To put it mildly. He turns back to draw down some cups.
fanoperator: (aesthete)

[personal profile] fanoperator 2021-03-07 08:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Huaisang blinks with wide-eyed awe at the thought of crafting gems and weapons all with the same skill. "That's remarkable. My sect is renowned for our artistry crafting weapons, though it's true that we have traditionally valued function over form. I've always been the odd one out with my love of art and beauty."

He draws a hand-painted fan out of his purse and opens it, stirring the air lightly to show off the beauty of it. "I'm an artist myself. This is far from one of my best works, but, well, I can't bear being without a fan to match every outfit." The match in this case to his tweed dress isn't perfect, but it's good enough to satisfy his aesthetic eye.
blackscales: Commission, Do Not Take! (13)

[personal profile] blackscales 2021-03-10 02:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah! He turns, studies the fan curiously. They are not especially popular as an art form, where he is from, but he does think he's seen one or two in Pandaria -- certainly the styling is similar.

"You paint?" he prompts. "On canvas or decoration only?"

After all, a decorative detailing on a fan is different to painting a landscape or portrait. He pours out the hot water into a teapot, considering it thoughtfully, and sets it aside. Wrathion's flair for design leans toward high detail, gold trim, things that aren't necessarily popular in their current realm's fashion. However, decorative painting has potentially. If only everything weren't slowed down with his magic so restricted! It really does frustrate him.
fanoperator: (taken aback)

[personal profile] fanoperator 2021-03-12 04:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Huaisang blinks at the question, slightly affronted by the idea that his painted fan is mere decoration. He lifts his chin primly, proud of his skill. "I am well experienced in all civilized forms of painting. I work part time here as an artist, creating wall hangings and decorations as the customer pleases."

He does few portraits but plenty of detailed landscapes, though the time cost of those and the price structure of the local customers has kept him from working on many of those here. He has no idea what kind of painting is done on canvas but he's not about to admit ignorance of any painting style after that slight upon his artistry. He would never consider painting on such a coarse material as canvas. Refined painting should be done on the finest bamboo paper or--preferably--on silk.

[personal profile] blackscales 2021-03-18 11:02 am (UTC)(link)
The answer implies a misstep in some way -- unsurprising, given Wrathion knows little about the finer details of art in general or painting. He glances up, tilts his head thoughtfully.

"I mean no offence," he offers carefully. "Only that I imagine there are different skillsets used in completing an individual piece to be hung or in a design for a fan. I wasn't sure if you enjoyed both equally."

He sets the lid on the teapot, turns to lean his weight back against the counter. Painting is not something he's ever been particularly interested in mastering, so he can only guess.
fanoperator: (don't be angry)

[personal profile] fanoperator 2021-03-20 02:13 am (UTC)(link)
"I do," Huaisang agrees, cheeks flushed with embarrassment at himself for becoming defensive like that. He's not usually so touchy, but painting is one of his few areas of pride. "I love painting, I've dedicated many hours to the study of it. I miss my collection of fans and art from back home. Here, I need to sell my work for pay, and I have little time to do the kind of work that I love. I have to focus on what I can produce swiftly for a profit."

Tugging shyly at one of the long bangs that hang on either side of his cheeks, Huaisang ducks his head. "I'm sorry for rambling on. But if you ever desire anything painted..."

[personal profile] blackscales 2021-03-23 01:43 pm (UTC)(link)
An interesting thought.

Certainly, there are images Wrathion wishes he could commit to canvas -- some more private than others. The views out from the Veiled Stair, the sun rising over Uldum, the night sky over Silithus, several memories he'd like to keep hold of.

Here, though?

Wrathion wonders if it may be better to keep those memories close to his chest. Better not to... allow anything personal to be exposed lest he regret it.

"Of course," he says smoothly. "Likewise, if you require any tailoring -- my spare time is limited but... if you have no objection to a potential wait."

Some small works should be easy enough. He thinks about Daylight's too-short trousers, and adds those to the list of things he'll really have to prioritise. If he has to see something like that again he may not be able to bear it.
fanoperator: (shy glance)

[personal profile] fanoperator 2021-03-27 10:52 pm (UTC)(link)
"I'd be very grateful for that. My closet was stocked with... mostly ugly things, and the women's clothes they sell in the shops doesn't fit me. I've been trying to learn sewing. If you'd consider lessons..." Huaisang sucks his lower lip into his mouth, fidgeting shyly. "I'd pay, of course. Either in art or lessons or cash, as you please."

He'd certainly rather give a portion of his earnings to Wrathion than to the locals, when it comes to commissioning alterations to his clothes.

Lessons?

Wrathion is not, usually, someone who partakes in... teaching. Teaching is a slow, arduous process. He has more patience than he previously -- as a younger man he barely had any at all, only interested in instant results.

However. There is, he realises, potential here. Firstly, potential to have Huaisang owe him a favour. There is value in that. He could add it to list and call upon it when he's in need. Secondly, there's value in having someone else able to tailor. The shops don't create things that interest him, in someone he knows able to use the machine might mean he could redirect some work when necessary.

Lastly, it would be useful to be in the good books of some people here. Friendship does not come... naturally to Wrathion. Interacting with mortals is often awkward. He knows they empathise much more quickly than he does, understand the world by different rules. Anduin would tell him he should make an effort. So then --

"Of course," he answers smoothly. "You needn't worry about pay. We can simply consider it a favour for a favour."
fanoperator: (mischief)

[personal profile] fanoperator 2021-04-12 03:17 am (UTC)(link)
"Very well," Huaisang nods, eyes hooded as he nods his agreement. Wrathion makes it sound light, but Huaisang knows the value of a favor, and knows that Wrathion knows it because of how precisely he offers those terms. But Huaisang has never yet had to worry about such things. He'll deal with the debt when it comes due. "I very much appreciate it."

Bowing respectfully, Huaisang smiles when he rises up again. "Teacher." The title is offered with respect to Wrathion's knowledge but also with a hint of playful cheekiness.
