JUST A DREAM FROM YESTERDAY
Living Island. If ever there were a first step to stopping this madness, it’s figuring out what those words mean. But starting is always the hardest part, and with nothing else to go by than two seemingly unrelated, nonsensical words left behind by a force you can’t see much less communicate with, an already arduous task seems even more impossible. This is furthered by the reactions you get when you hit the street and start asking people if they know anything about Living Island. Most of them can only look back at you blankly, as if waiting for a punchline that never comes. Others actually take you seriously enough to consider the question, and to their credit, they do take their time racking their brains to remember where they’ve heard that name before, why it sounds so familiar. But the most you’ll get back from them is a sheepish shrug of the shoulders and a reply that it sounds like something from TV. It gets to the point where their answers blend together, each one more unremarkable than the last. Save for the one you get from the last person you haven’t asked. Living Island.

But still, she's thrilled to see a familiar, mostly intact face.]
I'm stable, really. Compared to the others, I...
[That sentence really doesn't finish forming to make it out of her mouth. She doesn't want to say she got off lighter than the others because she's definitely still not looking great. While she's trying to think of what to say next, she'll place her hand against her face, it might look contemplative, but she's just trying to make sure that stupid glass eye stays in place because that's the last thing she needs right now.]
I can wait until we get out of here. I'm not in any immediate danger.
[There, that's an okay way of putting it. She wants to disinfect everything, without her Servant abilities, that's something to worry about. And she'd like to be rid of this pacemaker, but for now, she can manage.]
Thank you for coming to save us.

[ he's been worried sick about them ever since they had vanished. since his messages and calls were unanswered for several days straight. if he wasn't willing to try and personally retrieve one or two of them, daylight wouldn't be able to look himself in the mirror.
when he gets closer to her and thinks he can see the extent of what happened, daylight flinches but doesn't pull away, repulsed, or anything like that. it's... a lot to take in, yeah, but that's for the future them. right now- ]
Let's get closer to the exit. [ that way, when they have to, they can book it and get out of here faster. ] Is it alright if I ask you a few questions? Or would you rather we do that later? I'm game either way.
no subject
I don't mind, I may not have answers, but I can certainly answer what I can.
[She's in just as much of a hurry to get out of here as anyone else most likely, okay maybe not just as much of a hurry given how zappy her pacemaker can get, but still, she would like to be out of here. However, that doesn't mean she can't answer questions on the way out.
Hopefully the noise doesn't attract one of those doppelgangers though, that wouldn't be a problem.]
no subject
so, choosing his questions carefully while keeping an ear out for any sounds, daylight starts off with: ]
What did they do? To you and the others? [ he sees… the aftermath of what’s happened to her and the others but surely that’s not the only thing that’s been happening to them.
terrible as it is to say, there must have been more to this. especially with how big the group is.
while he waits for a reply, he offers his jacket to kiara if she needs extra warmth or covering. he’s a big guy. literally. he can handle the damp and chill down here. ]
no subject
Aside from what you see, I was subjected to...ah, I suppose you could call it interrogation.
[There's no suppose about it, that's exactly what it was.]
I was forced to answer a number of questions and unable to refuse. Or lie. But it was all focused on me and where I came from, our conversations are still very much a secret.
[She's thankful for that actually. Given the tranquilization, if she'd been asked about any of her conversations with the people here, she would've had no way to not answer truthfully.]
Though I can't recall who was asking the questions. I realize how unhelpful that must be.
no subject
because this is something they can work with: ] Interrogating you for information about yourself and where you’re from? That means they don’t have a lot of info to work with on their own.
We’re still possibly unknowns to them so we might have a few tricks up our sleeves, we might have a surprise or two for them if we play our cards right.
[ the more he talks, the more confident and hopeful he sounds as he lays out his thoughts on what this could mean. they might have an actual advantage then, if the ones behind the situation don’t know them, truly.
—which only begs the question: why were they all targeted? what did they all have in common to get sent here? daylight is trying to think of another question to ask kiara, keeping in mind that she won’t know a lot and she’s already been through hell, when he hears what might be footsteps.
... fuck. ]
Did you hear that?
no subject
[She's keeping her voice quiet, looking in the direction of those footsteps. Daylight said someone made a map, so there's definitely other people involved, but judging from the look of that bat, people aren't the only things down here to worry about.]
Did someone else come this way with you?
[Kiara's pretty sure from his reaction that's not the case, but it can't hurt to ask.]
no subject
[ an unfortunate answer he needs to give but he rolls with what’s happening, setting his jaw like he’s used to cracking heads open. (maybe he is. he is in a rather bad shape.) ]
Take this. Between you and me, I rather you have it.
[ daylight gives her the baseball bat, willing to let it go because he can handle himself in a one-on-one fight because it sounds like only one of the dopplegangers are approaching them. they’re kept in the shadows, mostly, so daylight needs to squint his eyes and lean forward, trying to catch their features and
he pulls back like he’s been hit, his eyes wide, his expression twisting in horror and confusion. ]
Oh fuck— Oh no— Why—
[ it’s a man that emerges from the shadows and seems to have put daylight in a state of distress and fear. he doesn’t look dangerous. in fact, the best way to describe him is friendly: lean with a shaved head, expression one of jovial surprise as a smile stretches across the cracked porcelain skin.
hey, day! the doppleganger calls out, placing hands (one whole, another broken, missing fingers) on its hips. look at you, all grown up! see that you took after your dad, ha ha haha ha ha haaa haaaa haaaaaa you have a friend ha ha ha hahaaaaahahaahh won’t you introduce her to me, day? aay? aaaaahahaha. ]
no subject
Her reaction's nowhere near as panicked as Daylight's is, how could it be, she doesn't know this guy at all. In fact, aside from the briefest look of surprise when the porcelain creature makes it appearance, what settles on her face is more of a look of disgust than anything else. She has compassion for all living beings, but really given how the last few days have gone, she's going to be a bit more honest about her feelings than she normally would be .]
...how distasteful.
[Her personal feelings about it aside, she doesn't move to take the bat to it, or utilize that power she got back. She isn't worried about a zap from the pacemaker, she doubts this thing is enough to get her too excited. No, she's more concerned that it might not be her place to deal with it, given Daylight's reaction and familiarity with the face it's wearing.]
no subject
but it changes over time. his expression hardens into something like resolve and equal disgust, lips twisting into a scowl as he whips his head back at uncle leeds—
at the rat bastard wearing the face of his uncle leeds. ]
Yeah... [ he takes a deep breath and hisses under his breath, ] This is fucking gross.
[ with a surge of renewed indignation and fire he hopes will stick, daylight makes a grab for a piece of rebar on the floor. not as sturdy as the bat but it has to do. he holds it like his life depends on it.
and it will now with how he snarls out, ] Back off, asshole, and don’t go near or my friend.
You’re not Uncle Leeds so you can get fucked.
[ the doppleganger’s smile fades, replaced with, at first, an expression of sorrow and confusion.
then it becomes a snarl, the expression one of pure rage as it screams and launches itself at the two.
daylight throws a swing and he feels it connect into the junction of neck and shoulder, feels and hears something break and crack. yet it surges forward, not caring, and it forces the two of them on the ground, tussling and fighting. it tries to wrap its hands around his neck but daylight holds the creature at bay, shoving his rebar under the creature’s neck to keep some distance. ]
Get off me and fuck off!
no subject
Though, she isn't going to stand here all day contemplating what she would do in his shoes, that seems like it would be a mistake. Especially with Daylight on the ground and that thing on top of him. ...okay, admittedly, she's wondering what she would do in that situation too, but she figures she should do something. And this bat she's holding is a bit useless. Plus, in her current condition, she's not sure she can really muster the strength to really make much of an impact.
So she doesn't use the bat. Instead, she'll use that power she got back a while ago. Maybe not the best time for a surprise, but if she can help, she should, no matter how unappealing her ability looks. So while Daylight tries to find the creature off with rebar, assistance comes in the unlikely form of a large tentacle, its nightmarish appearance looking more suited to being attached to some sort of ancient god in a horror story instead of the floor tile it seems to be sitting on top of.
It doesn't stay in place to be gawked at for too long though, slamming into the side of Daylight's not uncle, making the kind of unpleasant sound to be expected when nightmarish tentacle horror impacts some sort of porcelain monstrosity. Sorry about that. But on the plus side, it should've knocked it away and seems intent on keeping the doppelganger away from the two of them.]
I thought you could use a hand, even if that hand is a bit...unpleasant.
[Kiara sounds and looks a little apologetic about her power. It's freaky, she knows that much.]
It will last for about an hour, that would be plenty of time to get away from this thing. Unless you're intent on finishing it off.
[There's no judgment in her tone at all. She has no preference on the creature's fate. Whatever Daylight decides to do is all right with her.]
( 1/2, gag tag to end all gag tags. )
]
( 2/2, a real tag oh my god. )
that is a hell of a plot twist right there, folks.
daylight lets out a desperate gasp of air when the weight of the doppelganger is literally thrown off him, scrambling to back up on his feet and make some distance between him and the screeching, flailing thing wearing his uncle's face. it's... it's pinned down by something but he rather it be pinned down than him so he's not questioning the turn of events.
but the sight of it pathetic when he gets a proper look at it once he's back at kiara's side - daylight's face twists in disgust and disappointment, unsure of how to feel for the writhing, screaming thing before him. the one thing he does know is this:
he doesn't want it running around.
so when kiara gives the unsaid offer to him, he readjusts his grip on the rebar and feels it dig into his skin. it'll be a bitch if he dies from, like, metal poisoning or something but he'll be worth it once he settles this. ]
... I'll finish it off. It should be quick enough.
[ he can't let it wander around with his uncle's face. ] Will it, um, hold it down for me while I...? You know. Do it.
honestly that is the perfect reaction
So she'll just nod a little at Daylight's question, the Demon Pillar will do...well, whatever she wants it to do, so it'll ensnare the doppelganger, much like a boa constrictor coiling around its prey, holding it tight despite the creature's writhing and screaming. Unfortunately, that probably means there's going to be some awful cracking noises from the porcelain thing, but it can't be helped.]
It will, provided it's done within the hour. They only last so long here.
[Which raises a number of questions, but Kiara doesn't feel like openly speculating about that in the middle of an underground complex after going through a somewhat traumatic experience while her friend is preparing to bash a thing with his uncle's face to death. Really doesn't seem like the time.]
I agree with making it quick though. As distasteful as that thing is, it would be wrong to make it suffer any more than necessary.
no subject
[ no 'trying' on his end - he wants this other with as soon as possible. the less he needs to look down at the eerie facsimile of his uncle's face, has to hear that wrapped version of his uncle's voice.
he adjusts his grip on the rebar as he approaches the doppelganger, adjusting his grip one last time as he brings his arms up, readying for the smash, and swings it down as hard as he can bring himself to do so. (he still needs to close his eyes just before the rebar connects with the screaming, howling face. hearing the crack of porcelain and the crunch of more beneath it is unsettling as is. he doesn't need to fucking see it.)
daylight comes back from the doppelganger when it's all over. the rebar has been abandoned next to it, too bent to be of use to anyone now and, honestly, it can stay next to the broken remains of the doppelganger. ]
Fuck. [ his arms are going to be sore in the morning. he pretends the shaking is from exhaustion while rubbing his wrists, wincing. ] That was... That was intense.
Are you doing alright, Kiara? [ he pushes aside his problems, for now, looking at kiara with concern. ] That was a lot to go through so, um, sorry. I think we should get a move on because that was a lot of racket.
no subject
[She's doing her best to keep an even measured tone. She'd looked away for the actual kill, she can't say she particularly wanted to see it, but now she's turned her attention back to Daylight. It's not that she has any particular aversion to seeing that sort of thing, it's just also not entirely something she felt like seeing right now.]
I agree that we should go while we can. My...familiar, I suppose that would be a good word for it, can cover our exit. In case anything comes the same way we did. Oh, something that isn't someone else being rescued, of course.
[That's not a lie or anything, she can say she really has zero interest in siccing a Demon Pillar on anyone trapped here. She's just not that kind of person anymore.]
