Nope, the forest will be completely normal! Well, aside from the Ferthurs. They're still around. That said, if your character is lucky enough not to run into one of them, they won't meet any resistance or have difficulty making it back to town via one of the many trails found within Old Growth. That, or they can just keep walking and hope that they'll hit pavement eventually.
