[It's not the earliest Papyrus has ever woken up, but it's early enough. More importantly, it's February 1st, 1961. The calendar on his nightstand, tucked away just in case January repeated again, still has various notes he scribbled in it through the last month. A low bar for relief, but an undeniable one.

He puts the calendar back, ready to chalk it up to being just another day, when the framed photo on the nightstand catches his eye. Instead of just a portrait of the mysterious human Papyrus at a lake somewhere, it's Papyrus and also a mysterious teenager, with fishing rods and bulky jackets. That's new - and if it's anything like the photos of Kiara through the house, it's a sign things have changed again. Papyrus jumps to his feet and heads to the hallway, looking for signs of the new face.]

- SANSATIONAL NEWS: 103 Loomis Drive, midday of Feb 1st -
[This isn't the first time people have appeared in the house, given his own sudden arrival in Santa Rosita. It's not even the first time someone appeared, their face retroactively all over the house in the photos. But unlike the vague impressions of people in early January and October, he can still clearly remember the face of the teenager in his house, even as he heads outside with a photo in hand. Clearly, this means Louis is here to stay - and this is news Papyrus can't wait to share.

Theoretically, he could just use his wrist radio to send his brother an update on the whole family situation. But that would deprive him of the face journey Sans is sure to go on when he finds out, and who wants to miss that? Not Papyrus.

The entire Undertale household can find out while he's at it, because Papyrus opts to get his brother's attention by knocking loudly and familiarly at the front door before calling out.]

Sans! Sans, are you home? I have news!


- STOP, DROP, AND ROLL INTO SOME GREAT DEALS: Honeybees, Feb 1st - 4th -
[Between the newly arrived housemate, the expectations of providing parental guidance for a teenager, and the big fuss about a luncheon on Friday, well! There's a lot of reasons to go shopping. The various toys and decorations in the kid's room are a start, but they lack a certain personal touch. And what better way to bond, than with thoughtfully chosen gifts to make this home away from reality feel a little more welcoming?

So Papyrus browses the various floors at Honeybees: the clothes and toys of the first, the furniture of the second, and especially the third, with its array of sporting goods. Here and there a promising option just demands to be picked up and tested before purchase, which he does. Best not run around the corners, with people swinging bats!]

[He nods along with her suggestion, a little sheepish but more than willing to share the sense of equal blame in the near-collision. They're all culpable but able to do better, if they try, etc etc.]

'Just' Monika, huh? I hope you know, you're not just anybody.

[Even if she means it as she's just giving her first name, a little encouragement can't go awry. But Monika, where has he heard that name before...?]

Yes, I met him right away-- [Papyrus doubletakes.] What do you mean, too? Is there a kid here too??

[He leans forward a little, enough to peer around past the doorway, as though a kid will jump out and wave for his attention right away. He can't quite make out the details of the random photos on walls from here, but they don't look exactly the same as he recalls...]

Yeah. [Sans's face clouds with momentary confusion, but since he already talked to Sayori this month, he figures out its source quickly enough.] She kind of showed up in January, but she was talkin' about having that same weird dream situation we had when we showed up, right? So that's probably why you don't remember her. [Sans isn't sure why his memory seems more solid... Maybe because she was the only new person in his house? He remembers Papyrus talking about overlapping kids during the October situation...]

[His confusion and surprise shift, from relief to something of mixed delight -]

Yes, the Great Papyrus.

So you've already heard of me... What has Sans been saying?

[He knows Sans talks about him. Always has, probably always will. Funny stories that get people to laughing, maybe mostly fond but sometimes the indignation of everyone already thinking they know him is a bit much. Adults tend to be polite and evasive about it, reassuring him it's all good, but with little hints of laughter about them...

But maybe a teenager, the age renowned for excessive honesty, will be honest enough about just what Sans has been gossiping about him.]

[ Is that... Actual care and encouragement from someone she just met? That's so nice! This place is really better than her true home. Maybe it's really a chance for her to be truly happy. ]

Ahaha, I'll try to be more than just Monika, promised!

[ Papyrus... Papyrus... Now that sounded familiar, where had she heard that name before? Oh! During her "dream" of January she'd talked to a Papyrus through texts, right? That wasn't exactly a common name so it had to be the same person... She'd met a few people who remembered her dream-like experience of January whilst some others didn't. She wondered if he would? ]

Oh! Aren't you the Papyrus to whom I promised a dinner?

[ It would really be great to have his family, hers as well as Sans and Sayori's meet for a dinner! .....If half of them weren't about to be abducted and horribly maimed. ]

[Sayori is not exactly a paragon of honesty, but she has no reason to fib about this. She does, however, make a bit of a production of trying to remember everything Sans has said, putting a finger to her chin and tilting her head in exaggerated thought.] Well~ He told me you're his brother, you live next door, and you're the coolest. He talks about how cool you are a lot! I think he mentioned that you like to cook too?

[A decisive nod! Yes, this is what she remembers.] And he said that if I need someone to teach me how to exercise and stuff that you'd probably like to!

[The horns hadn't registered to Papyrus, since he's seen some decorative headwear on playful kids, it could well have been a hairy hat... But now that he's looking, the horns and scales stand out.]

Regained...?

[He goes from echoing the word in slow disbelief, to glancing around them and dropping his voice to a more conspiratorial whisper.]

You grew a tail back?? Like you had one before... Did you 'move here' recently??

[Oh, well then. If that's the kind of thing Sans is saying, he won't complain about his brother's usual gossiping habits. At least some of it is giving people a good impression. He smiles, pleased and embarrassed at once, before nodding decisively back.]

Coolness, cooking, and coordination... These are all ways Papyrus excels, it's true! And I'm happy to share my know-how.

But, I'm not sure why Sans recommended me...? [Why are you upstairs in Sans and Lorna's house, mystery complimenter? He could ask, just like he could ask her name, but he doesn't do either of these things.]

[Jiggling the cane like that could convey some message about respective physical conditions, or the appropriateness of challenging maybe-strangers to a physical showdown. It could do that.

Or, it could be interpreted as a gesture pointing out that this guy has his own wooden stick with which to hit balls, and imply an enthusiasm for doing so.]

Lacrosse, huh? I've never heard of it... Which must be why, you think you'd beat me so easily. [The question of cane use as a cane doesn't even enter into his defensive boastfulness. Not knowing the rules, for one, makes it harder to rule out what skills would be relevant.] But I'm a quicker study than that!

Huh...? Oh!!

[Papyrus starts to point at her, energized by the dots connecting, but thinks better of waving his finger rudely about in her face. Instead he rests his hand on his wrist radio, nodding enthusiastically.]

You're the Monika, who talked about... videogames! I remember that. I'm supposed to cook something, for when we meet up.

[And if she's not, well, that comment should mean completely and totally nothing to her. He hasn't seen a single videogame-like thing around here. No sense spreading the existential concerns with people not even a little in the know.]

the irritation brings a familiar memory back.]

[Sayori's answering grin is so delighted that it's hard not to clock it as a little mischievous. Is it time to break the news? He doesn't seem to have figured it out yet, so she thinks it's time.]

Well, if I'm gonna be living here for now, I need to get into shape so I can run away from creepy mannequins and stuff!

[Wow, she sure does not seem bothered when she says this. She barrels on without any change in expression.]

And it'd be pretty convenient for my Uncle Papyrus to teach me how, right?

[ Oh god, her conversation about video games... She'd really hoped it had been nothing more than a dream. What had possessed her, talking of something so personal on the network? Well, long as nobody but her knew it was personal... ]

Hm-mm!

[ Cooking. Yes, that's better than speaking of the video game topic. ]

Well really, if you're coming home I really ought to be the one cooking, heh? What kind of person would ask the guests to bring the food?

[It's taking him a minute to do the mental math of this conclusion, with how he's torn between excitement and worry and surprise. The prospects of a new family member, a new person with unfamiliar habits in the same living space! The commiserating with someone who's also been torn abruptly from their home to this mysterious surface town, with its occasional unexplained dangers, and the prospect of looking out for them in a parental way... even the mild confusion of having a conversation with someone in an upstairs window without warning.

Once Sayori admits to living here now, the numbers finally line up, and his eyes widen. He's about to offer a welcome, then she follows up with that form of address, and he gasps.]

O-oh my god?! U-uncle...

[He clasps his hands to his face, a little overwhelmed but eyes shining. He'd been braced for being a mom, or dad, or something. But even with Sans's surprise wife situation, somehow the idea of Sans as a dad... it's never gone through his mind. Not really. So for her to call him that first, well.]

I'm an uncle. Of course!!! Uncle Papyrus is happy to help!

Wha--oh my god! [That's where he saw this face before.

Papyrus takes a quick step back, not to back away but to buy a little space in which to point accusingly at Archer without stabbing a gloved finger in anybody's eyes.]

You!! So you did break in... and you weren't so drunk and confused, that you forgot after.

[Not so innocent an accident after all, huh?]

[It's a quick and quiet agreement between them, to chat about cooking instead of anything more existential. Especially in the middle of the sporting goods section of Honeybees, which is no place for questioning the limitations of any reality but one's physical fitness.]

Oh, well, you know. Sometimes potlucks are fun!

[Toriel's first time inviting the skeletons over had included a humoring of Papyrus's offer to bring food, which went over... well enough, in a way. They'd had some laughs, the dog had some pasta, and she'd taken over his cooking lessons. The ones that Undyne had abandoned in the importance of rebellion and ruling. And it all dovetailed very well into the general lessons on being a mom, which he'd taken to with a gusto.]

Everyone brings their favorite foods, to share and compare... A nice ice breaker! Not too formal.

Huh. [That's a discomforting theory, not least because how many memory issues they're already having. The largely dreamlike October, the totally forgotten November, the times in December when he'd been obsessed with Christmas cheer - and thought he was human? To know that even January, a month he largely remembers, had such big gaps in it...

He grimaces, and tries to make the grimace into something more of a smile.] Well! I guess, it just goes to show. All that time sleeping, back in the day... made you an expert at remembering dreams. There had to be some benefits... I guess.

[Actually, Sans likes Papyrus's theory a lot better. His grin widens.] Yeah, and here you were always on my case about it. But look at all that experience I got--my memory works like a dream.

[Takame couldn't blame the man for his hushed tone, though he's given up on any natives calling his appearance into question.

Takame's was a naturally quiet tone, at least.]

Somewhat. When I arrived initially in December, I did not have my tail, nor my horns or scales. [Or was it 'October'?]

At no point was I confused, asshole. I knew what I was doing. [what kind of alcoholic do you think he is? he's able to control himself right up until black out! that's what happens when you don't spend a lot of time sober...] I did forget! I just-- you pissed me off in the same way! It reminded me like some... Minority Report shit!

Ahaha, I guess that's a possibility! That sure would make the dinner varied and unexpected!

[ His proposal made sense, though... She kind of enjoyed the idea of playing the role of the housewife preparing the dinner for everyone. It had always been such a nice thought, and now it could be real... Was it really something she wanted to do or some leftover remnants from the game still influencing her? She would never know, so no need to think too much about it. ]

Well now that we've met, we should it do soon, don't you think? Hmm... How about on the 14th?

[ Right it's Valentine's Day, but that means at least she won't have to spend the day alone if both their families are together! And it's a pretty safe day to set a dinner. What could possibly go wrong? ]

You know you never predicted it would come in useful! [His library volume strains in the face of this need to protest. Don't take credit for absolutely absurd coincidences, Sans!]

Oh my god! And you've been turning back to normal since...?

[There's no stammer or grasping for a polite turn of phrase there, because of course being human isn't his first assumption of normalcy. But he doesn't stop there, because there's details to be gleaned.]

Did it happen all of a sudden?? I heard somebody grew very tall, very quickly.

The 14th, huh? Isn't that Valentine's Day...?

[Another of the holidays, when so far holidays have all been... hectic. He's not dismissing the suggestion out of hand, by any means. His tone is thoughtful, mulling it over and talking as he thinks.]

I haven't heard of any big parties... Or firm 'suggestions' for decorating... Maybe the luncheon's more important. So that sounds good to me! I'll tell my 'family.'

[It's not as if he has plans for romantic confessions with anyone, and probably neither do any of the people so recently deposited in Santa Rosita.

[ She nodded. Wait, is it going to look as though it's an attempt at getting him on a date...? Even though she is indeed absolutely the kind of person who'd do that, this time it hadn't been the intent at all! Promised. Besides there'll be their families. Speak about a date. ]

Excellent then!

[ Phew, thankfully he didn't get the wrong idea. That'd have been a terrible, terrible first impression. ]
