FEBRUARY 2021 EVENT: PART ONE

CHAPTER TWO, PART 1: A LIGHT LUNCH

Good times, great olives, Uliveto's.

INVITES AND INSISTENCES | BISQUE AND BREADSTICKS | FONTINA AND FOCACCIA | MUNDANITY AND MISHAPS

INVITES AND INSISTENCES

After a fairly low-key January, you start hearing the buzz on February 1st: The Happy Homes Association is inviting you to a luncheon on Friday! Stylishly dressed women in coats and hats are inviting everyone they know in the neighborhood, coming up and knocking on your door to invite you personally to come along. “Noon on Friday at Uliveto’s,” one of them tells you with a bright smile. “There’ll be food and drinks, and the whole community can get together and mingle a bit!”

Whether you’re home to answer the door or not, you’ll receive a small card advertising the event — it’s a fundraiser, after all, and they need your help! Pay just $3 and your food and as much as you’d like to drink are covered.

But some of the HHA members are a little more insistent, roving the neighborhood in search of anyone who’s just moved to Santa Rosita in the past few months. Their almost too-wide smiles and slightly-vacant eyes are a dead giveaway that these neighbors aren’t all at home, and they aren’t willing to take anything less than a “Yes” when they ask you if you’re coming. You’ve got to wash your hair? They know a hairdresser over at the salon on Main Street who can fit you in today. Groceries? Why, their daughter can take care of that for you in a jiffy! No excuse will fly with these Robbies; they’ve always got an answer and a way for you to make an appearance.

It won’t end once you’ve agreed, either (even if you just agree to get them off your back!). With the promise of another guest at the luncheon, the Robbies are quick to suggest that you should help them! There are so many people in the town, after all, and with more people volunteering to spread the word, they can make this the most successful fundraiser ever! (Or, well, at least the most successful since last year’s Little League candy sales!) Look, there’s another of your new neighbors over there — why don’t you go and invite them now? Your new friends from the HHA will be right here to support you and help you out!

BISQUE AND BREADSTICKS

On Friday, February 5th, Uliveto’s is easy to find — just follow the train of cars headed to North Santa Rosita, where the restaurant sits just off of Main Street with a parking lot that’s packed full. Hopefully you’re willing to walk, because it looks like the luncheon is in full swing! But as you get closer, you see that the ladies of the HHA have things down to a science as they welcome neighbors, invite them to join one of the many tables set up in the half of the restaurant they’ve taken over, and integrate newcomers into conversation.

“Oh, hello!” one of the ladies gushes as she spots you. “I’m so glad you could make it! It’s a little cold today, but you should try the tomato bisque — it always warms me right up! Come with me and Betty can get you all set up with your meal voucher; have you ever been to Uliveto’s before? It’s just divine; the salad and breadsticks are all you can eat and the pasta — golly, my mother never even tried to outdo it. We’d just come here instead!”

Before you know it, you’ve paid your entrance and have been shown to one of the large party tables (or maybe they’re multiple tables pushed together? What restaurant normally has tables that seat 20 people?), a waitress offering you the drinks menu and asking if you’d like to start with a glass of (nonalcoholic, of course!) wine. Once she’s gone, you’ll finally get a chance to look around the interior of the restaurant. The walls are a warm yellowed beige, and fluted columns break up the space with clinging ivy and grapes hanging from planters near the top. A mural is painted on the far wall of a terrace looking out over rolling hills and vineyards, and the soft music of an accordion reaches your ears…

“You all right, hon?”

One of the ladies at your table is looking at you expectantly. Don’t forget, you’re here to mingle and socialize! Time to break out that small talk!

FONTINA AND FOCACCIA

As the luncheon continues, you may be able to notice some of the HHA volunteers scurrying back and forth, taking turns manning the doors and the small table where Betty’s taking donations and issuing meal vouchers. Watch long enough and you’ll be able to see that all of them are ultimately reporting to three ladies who confer at a smaller table set back from all the mingling, talking amongst themselves and from time to time making notes in a small ledger.

At about half past noon, one of the women stands, calling out, “May I have your attention, please?” She has to repeat it a couple times to be heard, but after a minute or two everybody settles down. The woman nods toward all of the guests, then turns back to the table, allowing one of the women to stand and make herself known. Tall, graceful, and neat, she takes a look around the room as she speaks — does her gaze linger a moment on you?

Good afternoon, everyone. For those of you who may not know me yet, my name is Rosemary Craven, and I’m the head of our local Happy Homes Association.
A small wave of applause breaks out from some of the ladies; Rosemary seems to indulge them for just a moment before she lifts a gloved hand to quell it.

Please. I can only manage what I’m given, and the fine women of the association give me plenty to work with. Their efforts to organize this luncheon for all of us today showcase the dedication we should all strive for. Ladies, please stand and be recognized.

Today’s fundraiser is to benefit our town as Founder’s Day approaches in April. We’ve got big plans for the funds we raise — who knows? Perhaps we’ll be able to afford some yummy treats for the children. Who doesn’t love an ice cream cake?

Your generosity today makes all of this possible. You’ll forgive me for not giving you hard numbers, but I’d hate to be so gauche in such a lovely restaurant. Let me assure you, though, that the Happy Homes Association is here to help you in whatever way we can, whether that’s by helping you redecorate your homes, bringing over home-cooked meals, or teaching you some new skills — and speaking of new skills, I’d like to invite all of our new neighbors to talk with me personally if you think you might be interested in helping us out from time to time. Sewing might not be your forte, but everybody’s got something they’re good at, and we can always use the extra hands.

I’ll let you all get back to your meals. If you have any questions for me, please seek me out. I’ll be sitting just over here with Maude.

MUNDANITY AND MISHAPS

After the luncheon, things in Santa Rosita continue on as normal. The weekend comes and goes, the work week begins, and the cold February wind blows…

But when you wake up on February 10th, some of you are missing.

OOC INFO

Welcome to the first part of February’s event! You can use this entry to top-level for the event, but feel free to utilize the log and network communities as well. Sign-ups to have your character abducted are located here; please fill out the form provided along with any other pertinent details.

You may play with the townsfolk NPCs as necessary in your threads; non-Robbied neighbors will be cordial and happy to make small talk and will try to maintain the pleasant atmosphere. Robbies will, as always, be mindlessly optimistic and complimentary about everything—you may find that most of the Robbies have congregated at their own table and are bubbling with excitement over just about anything.

There will be a top-level posted for Rosemary below. If you would like to have your character interact with her, comment with your starter there. The mods will respond to tags for Rosemary until February 15th.

Any questions can go in our FAQ thread below. Try to check and see if your question has already been answered on the plotting thread first here.

Remember — part 2 of this event is coming February 15th!

[he glances over, in a way that suggests he gets that whole... don't remember an afternoon or entire day properly thing.]

Uh huh, [archer grunts non-comittally.] you bitched me out for some glass someone else knocked over.

[ with some confirmation, he sits back in his chair and takes that in for a moment. bruce supposes he could have been caught by surprise, but that would have taken the police in attendance a fair degree of skill. either that, or there was something else... ]

I don't remember that. But I think you've caught on to that already. Did anything else strange happen during the evening?

You mean aside from not being able to get a cab out of this shithole? No, not really. [he pauses for a moment, as something occurs to him.] That police chief is kind of a dickhole, huh?
the_caped_crusader: (Default)

[personal profile] the_caped_crusader 2021-02-08 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Something tells me he's seen more than he cares to talk about. Or can talk about.

[ the cogs are turning, but there are still too many questions for him to put anything together. what he does know, however, is that there is definitely something more sinister going on than just a dirty mayor and home association head controlling a small town in northern california... ]

He remembers the children who went missing in October, which tells me there are parts of this town that don't reset, even if the year's restarted itself.

[personal profile] undiagnosed 2021-02-08 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmm. [he got the same impression, kind of. the guy was kind of... obnoxious about his avoidance, and that's archer thinking that, though he doesn't quite remember what harding did to him.] I mean, everyone saying things just went back to '61 doesn't mean they did, Stephen King.

[archer downs his drink, then squints into the glass.]

Think we should tell them about Kennedy?
the_caped_crusader: (Default)

[personal profile] the_caped_crusader 2021-02-09 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
I take it these kinds of things don't happen very often where you're from, do they?

[ he regards archer seriously, without derision. one of the few times that will happen, probably. ]

For me, they do. And it's entirely possible. If I were to guess, I doubt the outside world even exists far beyond this town and that forest.

[personal profile] undiagnosed 2021-02-09 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
Nope. We got Russian cyborgs as head of the KGB and a failed Mars colony somewhere, but no time travel. Although...

[his mind flies back to the contractor work for the CIA. the shrinking tech. they wouldn't, would they? the humiliation of being punked by the CIA aside, surely holly would've retired in the three years he was out and slater-- god only fucking knows what that little rat is up to.]

Mmm. No. Never mind. That's a little defeatist, don't you think?
the_caped_crusader: (Default)

[personal profile] the_caped_crusader 2021-02-09 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
Realistic expectations. Consider everything a possibility.

[ he looks around at everyone being so... happy. it's a shame that it was a farce. a moment in time when everyone could get together and celebrate was, in time, the exact opposite. ]

We're in a secluded town in the middle of nowhere, our neighbors are smiling facsimiles of people, but there's something they're hiding. We don't know whatever lies beyond the tunnel or the forest, almost like whoever created it couldn't have envisioned a world beyond its borders. What does that seem like to you?

[personal profile] undiagnosed 2021-02-09 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
Like I'm still in my coma. [he makes a face.] I thought I was more creative than one town. Jesus, brain!

[personal profile] the_caped_crusader 2021-02-09 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
[ he ignores archer's response as he looks off into the distance, mired in his own thought. ]

It reminds me of how a child might see the world. And then I think about those missing children, and the fact that every afternoon, Harding parks his car outside of the school and waits. I think there's something there, but I don't know what to make of it, yet...

[something about that theory makes him go a little pale, wine glass stem breaking in his hand. he's unharmed, but he lets the glass fall to the table.]

Can't be AJ... [he says quietly to himself, pinching the bridge of his nose.] Trying to atone, maybe. Cops get weird about that kind of stuff.
the_caped_crusader: (Default)

[personal profile] the_caped_crusader 2021-02-09 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
Or maybe stop something that he can't.

[ they've been here for one of the cases of missing children, but how far back could it go? ]

A bus of missing children. A repeating year. If this was someone's dream, is this where time stopped for them? It's only a theory, of course, but... it does remind me of something.
undiagnosed: (pic#14468845)

cw vague mention of child death

[personal profile] undiagnosed 2021-02-09 02:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay, I'll bite. Reminds you of what? An episode of Stargate?

[he does wonder, though, if one of the kids was harding's-- it certainly gives him motive. but... he doesn't seem like the kind of guy to be in control of all of this.]
the_caped_crusader: (Default)

[personal profile] the_caped_crusader 2021-02-10 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
My own childhood, actually.

[ he doesn't laugh at the joke, not that he's laughed at any of archer's sarcasm so far. ]

My parents died when I was younger. Up until then, my world revolved around them and the city I grew up in. Imagining anything else, or even that something like that could even happen, was barely comprehensible to me at the time. From then on, it changed the way I looked at the world.

[personal profile] undiagnosed 2021-02-10 02:41 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not just trauma that makes people act like that, Sigmund Freud. This theory doesn't hold any water until you can prove there's nothing outside the limits which...

[he reaches out to flick a shard of glass away from the bread at the table, then takes a bite.]

I mean, good luck? Pretty sure physics doesn't work like that.

[personal profile] the_caped_crusader 2021-02-13 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
The universe is stranger than you think. And despite not understanding it, it'll still do whatever it wants to whether you believe it can or not.

[ he watches him eat the bread and thinks about warning him, but so far he hasn't seen any effect on the others. maybe it was slow release? or maybe he was just being paranoid. ]

Where I come from, I've seen worse than this.
undiagnosed: (pic#14468645)

[personal profile] undiagnosed 2021-02-13 12:31 pm (UTC)(link)
[he had thought about the food being a danger, but whatever. too hungry to care.]

Like what?
the_caped_crusader: (Default)

[personal profile] the_caped_crusader 2021-02-13 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I met Ares once.

[ he starts off small. his universe is too ridiculous for most people to even begin to believe, so setting the bar high is a sure way to be considered insane. ]

There's a lot more, but I think the implication of the Greek Pantheon existing is enough of a conversation starter.
undiagnosed: (pic#14468847)

[personal profile] undiagnosed 2021-02-14 02:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Uh huh. [archer doesn't believe that, but he's not really in the mood to argue. he knows how that's gonna go.] Why not Zeus? You not cool enough?
the_caped_crusader: (Default)

[personal profile] the_caped_crusader 2021-02-14 08:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Mm. No, only a guy who thinks he's Zeus.

[ good ol' maxie... ]

It doesn't matter what I tell you anyway, you seem like a skeptic. If I didn't know any better, I might be, too.

[personal profile] undiagnosed 2021-02-15 03:36 pm (UTC)(link)
How'd you know that Ares guy didn't just think he was Ares, then? [archer shrugs a shoulder.] I'm not trying to be contrarian, you know. I get no pleasure from this.

[surprisingly candid, considering:] I'm just tryin' to keep myself sane, I guess. To, uh, varying levels of success.
the_caped_crusader: (Default)

[personal profile] the_caped_crusader 2021-02-17 02:38 am (UTC)(link)
I've had some experience with these kinds of things, but to answer your question...

[ he sighs, pinching his brow for a moment. even his world sounds ridiculous to him, he's not sure why he's trying to get anybody else to believe in it. ]

He's a seven foot tall god dressed in magical armor who can divine weapons at will and conjure flames that can burn souls. He's not your average crackpot. I'm familiar with those too, unfortunately.
undiagnosed: (pic#14468593)

[personal profile] undiagnosed 2021-02-17 07:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Uh huh. [he'd believe it if he saw it - literally. lots of people like to tell him about all the stuff they've seen and done, but why would he believe them when there's nothing?] Right? Yeah, me too.

[the slight implication that he's talking about bruce himself hangs there, but archer never confirms it.

suddenly, like a tangent:]
What do you do? Cop?
the_caped_crusader: (Default)

[personal profile] the_caped_crusader 2021-02-22 06:09 am (UTC)(link)
Billionaire philanthropist.

[ also the guy who the cops call, but he doesn't feel the need to elaborate on that at the moment. ]
undiagnosed: (pic#14468846)

[personal profile] undiagnosed 2021-02-22 04:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Redistribute your wealth, bitch. [he shoots back immediately like he doesn't wish he had that sort of money to live his life even more extravagantly.] Friggin'... Batman-lookin' asshole.

[a beat, then:] Oh, tell me you're working retail here?
