FONTINA AND FOCACCIA
As the luncheon continues, you may be able to notice some of the HHA volunteers scurrying back and forth, taking turns manning the doors and the small table where Betty’s taking donations and issuing meal vouchers. Watch long enough and you’ll be able to see that all of them are ultimately reporting to three ladies who confer at a smaller table set back from all the mingling, talking amongst themselves and from time to time making notes in a small ledger. At about half past noon, one of the women stands, calling out, “May I have your attention, please?” She has to repeat it a couple times to be heard, but after a minute or two everybody settles down. The woman nods toward all of the guests, then turns back to the table, allowing one of the women to stand and make herself known. Tall, graceful, and neat, she takes a look around the room as she speaks — does her gaze linger a moment on you?

MUNDANITY AND MISHAPS
After the luncheon, things in Santa Rosita continue on as normal. The weekend comes and goes, the work week begins, and the cold February wind blows… But when you wake up on February 10th, some of you are missing. |

OOC INFO
Welcome to the first part of February’s event! You can use this entry to top-level for the event, but feel free to utilize the log and network communities as well. Sign-ups to have your character abducted are located here; please fill out the form provided along with any other pertinent details.
You may play with the townsfolk NPCs as necessary in your threads; non-Robbied neighbors will be cordial and happy to make small talk and will try to maintain the pleasant atmosphere. Robbies will, as always, be mindlessly optimistic and complimentary about everything—you may find that most of the Robbies have congregated at their own table and are bubbling with excitement over just about anything.
There will be a top-level posted for Rosemary below. If you would like to have your character interact with her, comment with your starter there. The mods will respond to tags for Rosemary until February 15th.
Any questions can go in our FAQ thread below. Try to check and see if your question has already been answered on the plotting thread first here.
Remember — part 2 of this event is coming February 15th!

"Founder's Day will take place in April," she continues. "It is a celebration of the day that Santa Rosita was founded all these many years ago. The festivities tend to vary from year to year, but one thing remains the same: We all think back to the men and women who first settled in this area, building our little city from the ground up. Where would we be if not for them?
"The Santa Rosita Planning Commission will begin planning this year's celebrations in earnest now that we've completed the fundraising cycle; I would love to be able to count on your support." Rosemary lowers her eyelashes a touch as she asks, "Why don't you tell me more about yourself, Mr. Wei? So that I know when we ought to call on you and your skills."

Her explanation fits with what the words are, something reflecting on those who initially settled this place. "Certainly not in this lovely place! Did the founders ever say what inspired them to settle in such a beautiful part of the countryside?"
At her lowered lashes and her question in turn, he smiles, tipping his head forward and and lifting his hands, palms up. "Ah, question enough to make a man blush!" Plenty to say if he is so inclined, he knows, but what in the context of this place, and to what degree does Rosemary reflect the same aversion to anything out of the town's concept of normal? Given the sheer abnormality of it all to him, it's like acting in an elaborate play for which he has no story. Endless improv is all he has going on right now. "I've worked in this and that over the years, as a painter, researcher, inventor, investigator, farmer, educator, spirit soother, family man. What would you like to know?"

"When you ask like that, how can I refuse?" Another smile, eyes squinting this time to extend the sense of it being meaningful, the hand at his nose dropping down to press to his chest.
"Please forgive me if what I say ends up being too direct, I'm not sure how else to say it. Spirit soothing deals with death. Not everyone, or everything, dies cleanly. When a life's cut short too soon, too violently, or with too much resentment in their heart, instead of passing on like we hope for all those we've lost, the spirit or their energy can stay behind. To soothe spirits is to help them move on, you could say," and he offers a helpless sort of laugh, palms turned toward her again from where his arms are at his sides, "Which might soothe the spirits of the living, too, knowing those they love aren't lingering to the point they forget themselves."
He's seen no sign of the reality he knows being part of the local belief system aside from a loose sense in the celebration several months past, but if anything reeks of the living and dead energies of those who are not strictly only human, the whole of Santa Rosita certainly does. There's certainly example enough of the living reaching points of forcibly forgetting themselves.
"It's not a belief for everyone," he says, offering a small shrug of his shoulders. "So please, you're free to laugh, I won't mind."

She takes a moment, looking as though she's gathering herself again, then asks, "How does one learn to do such a thing, Mr. Wei? Is it something you can be taught? Or must you be born with such talent?"
no subject
The question is one that stirs a flicker of unease in the pit of his stomach, but his smile doesn't waver. The ways of his learning had been desperate measures, accelerated because he'd been a cultivator, but not reliant on those things. "One can be taught," he says, "Though the only safe ways take time. Not getting overwhelmed by those energies is important."
Lest they all get away and cause damages not intended, or turn back on their wielder.

For a moment, Rosemary's gaze softens, before coming back to him with a soft smile. "Thank you for indulging me, Mr. Wei. I hope you won't think me silly if I ask you more about this at some point. There are a few spirits I should like to know are resting well."

Which is enough of a goodbye, he figures, before he grins and slips away, leaving her for whomever may be wanting to chat with her next.
